Rookie actor Charles Melton might be having a lot of success playing the role of Reggie Mantle on Riverdale, but when it comes to social media, he doesn’t look so good. Fans of the 27-year-old found old tweets stemming back from 2011 and 2012 that fat-shamed girls and children. Charles has since deleted the disgusting comments, but not before people on Twitter could get screenshots.

“Fat chicks need to understand that wearing yoga pants is a privilege, not a right,” Charles reportedly wrote in one tweet. Another read, “Word of wisdom for the day…if [you’re] fat…don’t look in the mirror.” The shaming got even worse when he brought kids into the mix. “Don’t tease fat kids, they already have enough on their plates,” he supposedly wrote.

Fans were rightfully really upset after seeing the tweets. “I can’t actually believe these. What the f–k,” one person wrote. Another said, “Ew he’s sexist, a fat-shamer, and can’t even spell ‘you’re.'” However, there were a few individuals on the platform who thought everyone should give Charles a second chance. “I think he changed y’all. Give him a chance.”

Since the tweets went viral, Charles’ publicist issued an apology statement from the actor. “I’m truly sorry for making inconsiderate comments several years ago and apologize to anyone I hurt. What I posted and said was immature, offensive, and inappropriate,” he explained. “I am ashamed of how I acted and there is no excuse for that behavior. I’m striving to do better and will use this experience to grow — helping others to understand how these types of statements are completely unacceptable.”

Charles’ Riverdale co-stars including Cole Sprouse, Camila Mendes, and Lili Reinhart have yet to speak about the scandal. However, Lili and Camila have opened up on multiple occasions about loving your body and accepting yourself for who you are — a very different philosophy than what was written on Charles’ Twitter account.
