Christina Aguilera‘s fiancé Matt Rutler is receiving major backlash after he was spotted holding 18-month-old daughter Summer Rain in his lap while driving.

The 30-year-old father allegedly pulled over to the side of the road in Brentwood, Calif., and placed the toddler on his lap before driving approximately 100 yards into a parking space. Christina watched from the passenger seat.

Under California driving law, all children under the age of eight must be properly secured in the back of a vehicle, and those who do not abide by the rule could be fined in excess of $475 and receive a point on their license.

Christina previously opened up wanting to be a good mom, telling People magazine, “That’s something I didn’t have when I was young and something I have been very vocal about providing for my children.” The singer also has a seven-year-old son named Max from a previous relationship.
