Claire’s Pulls Products After Testing Positive for Asbestos — and We’re Worried About the Children

Yikes! Claire’s was forced to pull several children’s makeup products from their shelves after testing positive for asbestos. The unsettling discovery came after a Rhode Island mom named Kristi Warner sent the makeup she purchased for her six-year-old daughter to the Scientific Analytical Institute, an independent lab in Greensboro, NC, to be tested.

In a recent interview with local NBC news station WJAR-TV, Kristi said that she “physically sank” upon learning that her child could have potentially put asbestos to her face. To make sure it wasn't just the makeup she purchased at Providence Place Mall that contained asbestos, Kristi decided to buy different items at various Claire’s locations to be tested as well.

According to more tests conducted by the Scientific Analytical Institute, every single one of the products Kristi sent them also tested positive for asbestos. “I ended up sitting on the ground, just trying to wrap my head around how something like that could end up in our home,” Kristi said of the aftermath.

As many are well aware, asbestos can have detrimental effects on one’s health. If an individual is exposed to too much of the toxic substance, they are at risk of developing malignant mesothelioma. Claire’s addressed the issue in a statement on Dec. 23 via Facebook.

“At Claire’s the safety of our customers is of paramount importance, and we are passionate about the safety and integrity of our products. We work closely with our vendors to ensure our products are tested and assessed in line with the relevant country regulations and guidelines,” the company said. “As a result of today’s inquiry from WJAR-TV, we have taken the precautionary measure in pulling the items in question from sale, and will be conducting an immediate investigation into the alleged issues. Once we have more information and have the results of the investigation, we will take the necessary action.”

Claire’s also included the entire list of items that have been effected by the asbestos problem. Some of those products — which you can check out here — included compacts, lip gloss, and various makeup sets.
