Ex-NFL player Will Smith is dead after what appears to be a tragic road-rage-fueled shoot-out.
The fight broke out between the former Saints defensive end, 34, and Cardell Hayes, the 28-year-old Hummer driver who allegedly rear-ended his Mercedes in New Orleans' Garden District, according to police.
Will then hit another car in front of him, got out to exchange words with the Hummer driver and died after being shot between six and eight times, according to New Orleans police.
"The male victim and the driver of the Hummer exchanged words at which time the driver of the Hummer produced a handgun and shot the male victim multiple times," police said in a statement, adding that the weapon was found at the scene.
Will's wife Racquel Smith, 34, was also shot twice in the leg and rushed to the hospital, but survived. The alleged shooter was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder.
"We are thankful for the outpouring of support and prayers," the heartbroken Smith family said. "We ask that you continue to respect the family’s privacy as they grieve the loss of a devoted husband, father and friend."
Will has three children, Lisa Mya Smith, William J. Smith and Wynter Chase Smith.
So sad and senseless. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who knew and loved Will.
