Ethereal. Effortless. Chic. Those are the three words designer Michael Costello used to describe his Spring/Summer 2018 collection during New York Fashion Week on Sept. 8. Life & Style spoke to the 34-year-old about his many celeb clients, including the time he helped Kim Kardashian style her former stepfather Caitlyn Jenner for the 2016 ESPYs.

“Kim called me and she said, ‘Michael, I’m doing this really fun thing for the ESPYs. Would you help me dress Caitlyn? I thought you would be perfect for the dress that I have in mind for her,’” Michael told Life & Style. “So I said, ‘What is this? Is this like your return to styling?’ And she said, ‘Sort of, kind of, yeah.'”

The Project Runway alum revealed that the 36-year-old knows what she’s doing when it comes to fashion. “Kim is always very super easy to work with. She has a great opinion on style. And a lot of people, you know, they see her and they’re like, ‘She looks so great. She can wear this, she can wear that.’ But a lot goes into the look. And she’s really good at it. She knows what shoes to put. She knows what belt to put. She’s great at styling, great at accessorizing. I love that about her.”

As for his most surreal moment as a designer, Michael admitted it was the time Beyoncé wore his look to the 2014 Grammys. “When that happened, I was like, ‘Oh my god, she really wore it, this is so crazy. I can’t believe this is happening. How did we do this?’” he recalled.

“But also, we dressed Kesha like a really long time ago, way before Beyoncé, and it was when we did the American Music Awards and she wore a dress, and I said, ‘Wow, we got a really cool celebrity on the red carpet wearing one of our dresses, it’s really happening,'” he continued. “And occasionally, I wanna try to pinch myself, but there’s never time because we’re always planning for something else.” We’ll be keeping an eye out for more of Michael’s beautiful creations on the red carpet!
