Do not expect Kristen Stewart to play by the rules — even if it’s at the Cannes Film Festival! The Twilight star made headlines after taking her shoes off and walking barefoot on the red carpet this year — going against the longstanding rule for attending the prestigious affair, stating women must wear heels. On Monday night, the 28-year-old kicked off her black Christian Louboutins in protest. See it all play out in the video above!

Kristen attended the premiere of Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman when she decided to pull the stunt. She was also dressed in a silver Chanel minidress, with her hair slick back and light makeup. While the On the Road star certainly didn’t need shoes to complete her stunning look, fans were quick to recall that two people were sent away from the Carol premiere back in 2015 for not abiding by the dress code. However, Julia Roberts pulled a similar stunt in 2016 — and walked the red carpet barefoot while attending the Money Monster premiere.

Kristen first made it clear that she was not down with the heels-only requirement while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter last year. “There’s definitely a distinct dress code, right? People get really upset at you if you don’t wear heels, or whatever,” she shared. “But you can’t ask people that anymore. It’s kind of a given. Like, if you’re not asking guys to wear heels and a dress, you cannot ask me either. Which is nice because even four years ago, that wasn’t a question.”

A festival spokesperson released a statement via Variety regarding the controversy, reading, “Regarding the dress code for the red carpet screenings, rules have not changed throughout the years (tuxedo, formal dress for Gala screenings), and there is no specific mention about the height of the women’s heels as well as for men’s. Thus, in order to make sure that this rule is respected, the festival’s hosts and hostesses were reminded of it.” Maybe next year shoes won’t even be required!
