Nearly two weeks after news broke about Liam Hemsworth‘s split from Miley Cyrus, In Touch can confirm that the actor filed for divorce. In the paperwork, which was filed on Wednesday, August 21, the movie star cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split, hinting in his own way about what went wrong in his marriage. Though neither he nor the singer have officially clued fans into why their relationship fell apart, Miley seemed to hint in her new song “Slide Away” that “whiskey and pills” played a part.

The two tied the knot back in December 2018 and called it quits after just nine months, though the divorce filings didn’t cite a date of separation. A source close to the stars told Us Weekly that they actually broke up even earlier, claiming that Miley, 26, “was the one who ended things” and the couple “haven’t been together for months.” She was also the first to indirectly address the split, writing about how “change is inevitable” on Instagram. After a few days, Liam, 29, also spoke out.

“Hi all,” he addressed his fans on August 12. “Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward. This is a private matter and I have not made, nor will I be making, any comments to any journalists or media outlets. … Peace and love.” Since the breakup, he’s been spending time with his family and “leaning on” them in order to get through it.

Miley, meanwhile, has been moving forward and was even caught kissing someone new, gal pal Kaitlynn Carter. The two women got lunch with the singer’s mom, Tish Cyrus, after they returned from their trip to Italy. “They’ve actually met a few times,” a source exclusively told In Touch. “Tish met Kaitlynn a month or so ago in the U.K., and they’ve also all met up in L.A. before Miley and Liam announced the split.” According to the insider, “Tish has given her seal of approval and really likes Kaitlynn and thinks she’s fun. … Tish’s main priority is Miley’s happiness.”
