In a ‘New York Minute’ One Little Movie Nearly Destroyed the Olsen Empire

Looking back, it feels as though Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were about to top off their toast to legal adulthood with New York Minute. After all, the twins were basically on top of the world when New York Minute hit theaters — actual theaters! They had been in front of the cameras since they were infants and finally it was time to come into the theaters for the first time since 1995's It Takes Two. This time, they were going to prove to be true actresses, making that transition into true thespians.

Or not. Cut to: New York Minute making history as the 11th worst wide opening of all time, and collecting so many seething reviews that it currently holds an 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

So what went wrong? This may break your nostalgia-loving hearts, but here's the deal: New York Minute is an objectively bad movie, just like all Olsen twins movies are objectively bad movies. But unlike their straight-to-video ventures, New York Minute is an expensive objectively bad movie that had to appeal to people outside of the "starry-eyed 11-year-old" demographic. It's a movie that relies too heavily on a cameo from Simple Plan, probably the seventh most relevant pop-punk act from that era. That tells you everything you need to know about how objectively rough this movie is.

It doesn't, however unpack all the interesting elements surrounding the New York Minute era, a rise-and-fall story that ultimately destroyed the Olsen twins…for the better. Click through to learn more about the darkest moment in the Olsen Twins' career.
