It's been almost five months since Matt Lauer was unexpectedly fired from The Today Show for alleged sexual misconduct, and now it seems his marriage is ending, too. A source tells People, the former show anchor and his wife Annette Roque "rarely" talk, and are "preparing for divorce."

“He is truly devastated and wants to make up for anything he has done to hurt people,” the insider shared. “But the damage in his marriage can’t be fixed, and each would be better off to move on. They know this, but the kids are important to both of them.”

A source tells Entertainment Tonight, Matt has "cut himself off from the life he new" and has been "isolated" since his firing. "He looks exhausted," the source continued. "Matt is finally coming to terms with the reality that his marriage is over and he is in bad shape. He feels he lost everything important in his life overnight. He is embarrassed and ashamed." On Matt's marriage with Annette, the source says, "There's no chance at this point they will work things out."

The couple has been together for nearly two decades, but that doesn't seem to be enough to save their marriage. Sources exclusively told Life & Style in December that Annette was planning to file for divorce after the holidays, and opened up about the scandal to her closest friends and family. "She’s furious with Matt for leaving this legacy for their kids [son Jack, 16, daughter Romy, 14, and son Thijs, 11],” says the friend. “Matt let her down, yes, but their children [having to deal with it] — that is what makes her especially angry.”

The source also revealed that Annette, who filed for divorce from Matt, 59, in 2006 citing "cruel and inhumane treatment," was past the breaking point. Annette “has survived one gut punch after another over the scandal,” says an insider. “She’s told a small circle of friends and relatives that she feels completely betrayed."

"The last thing he wants to deal with on the heels of his ruined career...is a divorce,” the source continued. But it looks like the former model made up her mind.

Following the bombshell news that he abused his power at NBC, Matt released a statement apologizing for his behavior. "Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed,” he wrote. “I regret that my shame is now shared by the people I cherish dearly. There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions. To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry."
