Miley Cyrus’ Emotional VMAs Performance Is Her First Public Appearance Since Liam Hemsworth Split
She’s back! Miley Cyrus is no stranger to taking the stage at MTV VMAs, and she just did it again at the 2019 show. After dropping her new song called “Slide Away,” which hints at her messy breakup with husband Liam Hemsworth, the star sang it live in her first public appearance since the split. The musician kept it simple as she donned a black dress and held the microphone tightly as she powerfully performed the heartbreaking lyrics.
One fan on Twitter called it the singer’s “best performance EVER,” with another noting, “I can feel the pain and sorrow in her voice. So beautiful.” Smilers couldn’t help but note how proud they were of their girl as she slayed the performance. “I’m ugly crying,” wrote a third fan. “Miley Cyrus killed it on stage.”
Before the jaw-dropping performance, fans couldn’t help wonder if the star would show up alone now that she’s newly single. Of course, some fans didn’t expect the star to show up at all and were surprised to hear that she’d be taking the stage. After the singer was left off of the initial nominations, she told one fan on Instagram that there was “no f–kin’ way” she’d perform, agreeing with another fan that the show cares “more about a f–king green screen than a message to the world.”
Since then, the star’s song “Mother’s Daughter” did manage to make its way into two fan-voted categories, Song of the Summer and Best Power Anthem. And fans are pretty much in awe of the singer’s pull. “I can’t believe the VMAs made two new categories for Miley because she was pissed off at them, her power,” one playfully wrote on Twitter. “I guess the #VMAs are not canceled anymore,” joked another. A third added, “Miley dragged the VMAs and now they’re having her perform. They must’ve offered her a good check once they realized no one is really that interested in the show this year. 😭”
Fans couldn’t help but notice that Miley wasn’t alone as she prepared to take the stage, however. Rumored fling Kaitlynn Carter was spotted supporting her backstage. Considering the fact that Kaitlynn stars on an MTV reality show, she definitely got her own invite to the event and didn’t need to be Miley’s plus one, but that didn’t stop the two from having a moment. Kaitlynn watched Miley at her rehearsals earlier in the day, and the cameras caught them before the singer’s performance. “Miley was walking with Kaitlynn. OMG, they looked so cute,” one fan wrote.
The Hills: New Beginnings star’s ex Brody Jenner was likely also in attendance, but we doubt he’d mind the spotlight shining on Kaitlynn and Miley. “[Their] relationship … doesn’t bother Brody in the slightest,” a source exclusively told In Touch. “It’s good publicity for him. He’s still friends with [both of them].” And as for the singer, the source continued, “Miley’s the happiest she’s been in years. … She’s embracing her sexuality and newfound freedom, and telling pals she can finally be herself without anyone getting in the way.” Confirming that Kaitlynn and Miley are dating (and not just, you know, making out while on a seaside Italian getaway), the insider added, “They’re both very sexual, open women who don’t take life too seriously and like to have fun – they’re crazy about each other, and friends say they make a great match.”
