Owning it. Russell Brand opened up in a new interview about ex-wife Katy Perry, and admitted fault in their short-lived marriage. Speaking with Us Weekly for a Q&A published on Friday, Oct. 6, the comedian, 42, explained why he believes he and the California Gurl ultimately didn’t work out.
“I’ve changed a lot in the last five years,” Russell, who married Laura Gallacher in August, told the publication. “I don’t compare my relationships now to previous relationships out of respect to my present wife and to Katy Perry. I think I’m an easier person to be with now. I’m also in a very different situation. I’m dependent on my wife.” See what else he had to say about his pop star ex in the video below!
As previously reported, Russell sent a text message to Katy, 32, in December 2011, letting her know that he wanted to end their 14-month marriage. “Let’s just say, I haven’t heard from him since,” the “Firework” songstress told Vogue in 2013. “He’s a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him.”
Aside from his relationship with Katy, Russell also discussed his former addictions — including battles with drugs, sex, and food — and his new book, Recovery: Freedom From Our Addictions, a self-help guide for those experiencing the same struggles. “I want to help more people get into recovery,” he said.
Russell, who recently celebrated 14 years of sobriety, added, “I want to help people become conscious of their addictions. I want to help people look at the world differently and pursue goals that are for their benefit and not to the benefit of other people.”
According to the UK native — who welcomed daughter Mabel with wife Laura, 30, in November 2016 — fatherhood has changed him for the better, and has motivated him to stay sober. “[It] has made me recognize that what I want and what I need is not important. It's what she wants and what she needs,” Russell said of his little girl. “That’s a good thing because I can be a very self-obsessed guy.”
