Coparenting isn’t easy and Scarlett Johansson is first to admit it. The 35-year-old opened up about parenting a child with her ex-husband Romain Dauriac and potentially growing her family in a new interview.

“You know, understanding what it is to coparent — that’s a very specific thing. It’s hard to raise a child with someone you’re no longer with. It’s hard,” the actress told Vanity Fair in an interview published on Tuesday, November 26. “It’s not probably how it’s ‘supposed to be’ — in quotes — or whatever … But, you know, I think my ex and I do it as well as we can. You have to prioritize your child and not put yourself in the middle. It has its challenges.”

The actress shares her 5-year-old daughter, Rose Dorothy, with her second husband. Although coparenting is no easy feat, she loves motherhood and how it makes her a better person. “The experience of being a mother was very helpful, and it was a great tool,” she said. The star added she would want a bigger family and wishes she could have had one with her daughter’s father.

“The idea of building a family, making a family and having that work, I like that idea. I think that would be wonderful. I’ve always wanted that. I wanted that also in my marriage to my daughter’s father as well. It just wasn’t the right person. But I like that idea … I mean, the first time I got married I was 23 years old,” she explained.

Although she doesn’t mention him by name, Scarlett’s first husband was Ryan Reynolds. She admitted she may not have been ready for the commitment back then. “I didn’t really have an understanding of marriage,” she said. “Maybe I kind of romanticized it, I think, in a way. It’s a different part of my life now. I feel like I’m in a place in my life, I feel I’m able to make more active choices. I’m more present, I think, than I’ve been before.”

Luckily for the actress, she has found her happily ever after with Colin Jost. The two got engaged back in May and Scarlett said it was a beautiful proposal. “He did [do it in a romantic way], he killed it,” she gushed during an appearance on an episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show last month. “It was a very James Bond situation. It was surprising. He’s got a lot behind that news desk he’s hiding.”

We are happy to see the beauty in love and handling coparenting in stride.
