No one could pick their jaws up off the floor last night when Simone Biles was unexpectedly eliminated from Dancing With the Stars before next week’s finale.

Despite receiving two perfect scores on Monday, the Olympic gymnast didn’t get enough viewer votes to make it through, losing out to singer Normani Kordei, NFL running back Rashad Jennings, and former MLB catcher David Ross.

Simone wasn’t the only one surprised by the elimination. In fact, the 20-year-old handled her emotions better than most. The judges were clearly shocked, as were hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews. Lindsay Arnold, who was in the bottom two with her partner David, mouthed “WHAT!” after the news was announced.

Although she was sad to leave, Simone was able to joke about it on Tuesday morning. “I thought they were going to pull a Steve Harvey on us. But, it’s OK,” the gold-medalist teased on GMA, referencing the talk show host’s infamous blunder at the Miss Universe pageant.

But her pro partner, Sasha Farber, couldn’t be happier with all she’s accomplished. “If you’re going to go out, you go out on a note like that,” he said. “I’m so proud of Simone, she’s grown into a beautiful woman. She’s a dancer now. I feel like this show is all about growth, and she did exactly that. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner.”

The powerhouse made headlines last week when she defended herself following harsh critiques from the judges. “At the time, I think expectations were a little bit different for each contestant,” she explained of her reaction to their comments. “It’s hard to follow [fellow gymnast] Laurie [Hernandez], I feel like they wanted me to pick up where she left off, which is hard because we’re two different people. But I had an amazing time on the show, it was exciting.”
