Uhh… Did The Weeknd Seriously Just Diss Selena Gomez in His New Song?
Yikes. The Weeknd and Selena Gomez may have ended their relationship in November 2017, but the break-up drama is far from over. The “Starboy” singer released a song called, “Call Out My Name” off his new EP, My Dear Melancholy, and listeners think he’s not only throwing shade at Selena for reuniting with Justin Bieber but also revealing that he was willing to be her kidney donor.
The lyrics read, “We found each other / I helped you out of a broken place / You gave me comfort / But falling for you was my mistake.” The 28-year-old seems to reference the beginning of their relationship when Selena had just left rehab. His use of the word “broken” is one Selena used in one of her most memorable speeches to date at the 2016 American Music Awards.
She said, “I think it’s safe to say that a lot of you know a lot of my life whether I liked it or not and I had to stop. Because I had everything, and I was absolutely broken.” While The Weeknd could have referenced this speech as well as Selena’s state of mind when they first connected, he goes on to say that falling in love with her was his “mistake.”
Fans of the couple know that after they cut ties, Selena ran back into the arms of Bieber. And although Selena and The Weeknd never made a public statement about their split, it’s clear — judging by these lyrics — that he still had ~feelings~.
The song continued, “I said I didn’t feel nothing, baby, but I lied / I almost cut a piece of myself for your life / Guess I was just another pit stop / ‘Til you made up your mind / You just wasted my time.” The second line here potentially means that The Weeknd tried to be a donor in Selena’s search for a kidney.
The “Bad Liar” singer had been battling Lupus for several years and ultimately needed a new kidney to save her life due to complications from the disease. Her friend, Francia Raisa, ended up donating her kidney to Selena, but since The Weeknd was dating her at the time, it doesn’t seem too far-fetched that he would have offered up himself as well.
And while he sings about not only loving her and allegedly offering his kidney, he also makes a remark that throws shade at her jumping into another relationship so quickly. The line that reads, “Guess I was just another pit stop,” has fans convinced he was just a distraction until Selena got what she wanted — and that was Justin.
