Long, blond hair has always been part of the signature package that is Kate Hudson. But the 38-year-old actress and face behind the athleisure company Fabletics has given up her go-to look for one nobody saw coming. The mom-of-two shaved her head — and for a pretty good reason.

Fans of the Academy Award-nominated actress had many questions after seeing a recent Instagram post from the star. “We at it again,” Kate captioned a photo of herself, son Ryder, and her boyfriend Danny Fujikawa. She even threw in the hashtag #DirtBikeRyders. But it turns out the ‘do is all for a film role.

“You and Ryder are definitely twins now,” one Instagram user commented. Another wrote, “Your shaved head is so awesome!!! I shaved mine last year and now wear a shaved hairstyle. You’re so beautiful!”

But she revealed in a new interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that she’s still adjusting to her nearly bald head. “I haven’t gotten itchy, but I’m starting to go through the first awkward stage of [it] growing out,” she admitted. “It’s, like, sticking up. I have to put it down with product, so it’ll be interesting.”

Kate’s buzzcut followed the announcement that she’ll star in Sisters, a movie directed by Sia. In the film, Kate appears alongside Maddie Ziegler, 14 — the former Dance Moms recruit who rose to fame after starring in a multitude of the singer’s music videos.

We don’t doubt that Kate likes having less hair to manage — and groom. The actress previously talked about how little time she has as a parent. “I mean, nothing is better than your kids — nothing. At the same time any parent will tell you, it’s also the hardest thing that you ever have to do. It’s the only thing you can really mess up at,” she said. “With that being the priority, your life becomes really about how to balance the family and everything else comes second.”
