Why Did Kim Zolciak, Kroy Biermann Split After 11 Years of Marriage? Inside Financial Woes, Accusations
Don’t Be Tardy alum Kim Zolciak-Biermann and estranged husband, Kroy Biermann, shocked fans with their split in May 2023, which In Touch confirmed at the time. Though many have speculated that their divorce is due to their ongoing financial stresses, others wonder if that is the only reason behind their breakup.
Why Did Kim Zolciak-Biermann and Kroy Biermann Split?
The former couple’s simultaneous divorce paperwork was filed in the Fulton County Superior Court on May 8, the same day it was reported that Kim and Kroy owed $1.1 million in taxes, interest and penalties to the IRS from the years 2013, 2017 and 2018. The pair also allegedly owed the state of Georgia $15,000 for the year 2018.
Prior to that, the former couple’s home was nearly sold at auction in March. In October 2022, In Touch confirmed that the family’s house was facing foreclosure after Kim and Kroy failed to repay a $300,000 loan that they took out on the house, which they purchased in 2013 after taking out a $1.65 million mortgage.
The 5-bedroom and 6.5-bathroom property was scheduled to be sold at auction to “the highest bidder for cash” on March 7, 2023, with Truist Bank set to oversee the sale. The duo was able to make a last-minute deal and the house taken off the auction block on February 22.
What Did Kroy and Kim Say About Each Other Amid Their Divorce?
On May 22, Kroy filed a “Motion for Psychological Evaluation” for Kim, alleging that she has exhibited “troubling behavior” in the months leading up to their split, according to court documents obtained by In Touch. The former NFL player claimed that Kim acknowledged “spending substantial time and marital funds on gambling and other games of chance,” adding that this “compulsion has financial devastated” both of them.
Prior to that, Kim asked the court that Kroy be drug tested in paperwork viewed by In Touch on May 17. The Florida native claimed she’s seen him smoking marijuana and has “serious concerns for the safety and well being” of their four children when they were in his custody. Kim asked Kroy to submit to a five-panel hair follicle drug screen and that he not cut his hair until the screen was complete.

One day after Kroy filed for divorce the second time, he reportedly locked Kim out of the house and left a pillow on the doorstep, according to Radar Online. A police report obtained by the publication revealed that Kim called authorities to report a “domestic disturbance.”
“She had a locksmith come out and drill into the door to get her in,” the police report allegedly read. “Her husband has put a pillow outside the door and won’t let her in the house.”
Things got even uglier after one of Kim and Kroy’s children called the police to help diffuse an almost physical fight between them. In Touch obtained police reports and body cam footage of the aftermath of their argument, where Kroy was yelling at Kim as she sat in her vehicle attempting to leave their property.
The retired NFL star accused Kim of “f–king other men” and insinuated they were fighting because “There’s no money” and “there’s no house.” Kim, on the other hand, admitted to a police officer that she wanted to “get divorced” but Kroy “wouldn’t let” her leave earlier that morning.
“He jumped in front of my car,” she said, adding, “He’s blocking me from leaving.”
Although one of their kids suggested there was a possibility of Kroy hitting Kim, the other kids claimed “multiple times” that it “never turned physical and they were just yelling at each other.”
