Two Glasses of Wine a Day Reportedly Makes Your Brain "Cleaner" — and We Won't Argue With Science

This has to be the best news you'll hear all day! A new study suggests a couple of glasses of wine per day will help “clean” your brain. Scientists from the University of Rochester conducted a study where mice were given the equivalent of two-and-a-half glasses of wine per day, and it turns out, their bodies were better at removing the waste associated with dementia.

Dr. Maiken Nedergaard, the lead author of the study, explained that while alcohol in high doses can be detrimental, in smaller doses, it can be helpful! “Prolonged intake of excessive amounts of ethanol is known to have adverse effects on the central nervous system,” he said. “However, in this study, we have shown for the first time that low doses of alcohol are potentially beneficial to the brain, namely it improves the brain's ability to remove waste.” And, good news for the beer drinkers out there. Apparently, brewskis have the same effect as wine!

Previous studies have shown other benefits of wine, like weight loss! In 2012, a study in the Journal of Physiology revealed that drinking one glass of red wine could have the same effects as one hour of exercise! Apparently, a natural compound that is in red wine “may enhance exercise training and performance.”

Jason Dyck found that if you're exposed to the compound, you would see an improvement in performance, strength, and heart function. "We were excited when we saw that resveratrol showed results similar to what you would see from extensive endurance exercise training," he said. "We immediately saw the potential for this and thought that we identified 'improved exercise performance in a pill.’” We appreciate the thought, but we don’t need our wine in pill form — we like drinking it!
