On the surface, Girls star Zosia Mamet seems blissfully happy. But no one knows she's been secretly suffering an eating disorder — until now.
The 26-year-old actress pens a column in the September issue of Glamour, and in it she reveals her long battle.
"This struggle has been mostly a private one, a war nobody knew was raging inside me," she writes. "I tried to fight it alone for a long time. And I nearly died."
Zosia says the obsession with her weight began at the age of 8 when someone told her she was fat.
"I'm not fat; I've never been fat. But ever since then, there has been a monster in my brain that tells me I am."
Society's impossible standards certainly didn't — and still don't — help.
"Our culture delivers a real one-two punch: You want to control something, and then society says, 'Hey, how about controlling the way you look? Skinny is beautiful,' " she says.
"It's no secret that we live in a country with a warped view of beauty."
Zosia eventually sought treatment after her father, David Mamet, held an intervention. But she found herself falling back into old habits after finishing the program.
Luckily, she's in a much better place now and at a healthy weight. Those demons, however, remain in her head.
"[I'm] an addict in recovery … I realize that my obsession will always be with me."
She continues, "Let's diminish the stigma. Let's remind one another that we're beautiful."
