Do you exercise because you love yourself, or do you do it because you don’t? Fitness expert Lacee Green shares how engaging with fitness for the right reasons can completely transform the relationship you have with yourself.

When it comes to leading a healthy lifestyle, everyone has their “why.” For some, it could be a desire to look good in a bathing suit. While for others, it could be to ensure good health and the ability to keep up with grandkids.

Regardless of what your reason is, what’s most important is that it comes from a place of love and appreciation. In society, too often people try to change themselves to conform to idealistic standards of beauty, leading individuals to become too hard on themselves and do themselves a disservice by creating a cycle of self-criticism.

BODi Super Trainer and self-love advocate Lacee Green emphasizes an important shift in mindset when it comes to workout programs.

Known as @thecurvygirltrainer, Green embodies a holistic approach to wellness that goes beyond physical appearance and focuses on overall well-being and happiness. Her infectious energy inspires people of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds to lead healthier lives and do workout programs that make them feel good.

She believes that the motivation to be healthier should come from a place of genuine self-love, rather than external expectations.

“The shift is from thinking, ‘Oh I can’t eat that ice cream,’ to having an open mindset that goes, ‘I love myself enough to want to be the healthiest and happiest version of myself, but that means I can still enjoy this ice cream with my family,’” she says.

Leading a healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to mean a restricted diet or forcing a workout. It can very much look like continuing to enjoy the foods you love and letting your body rest when it needs to.

She explains that when you shift your mindset to “finding joy and dropping the judgment,” it can cross over to every other area of life. For example, yes you can have ice cream, but do it in a way where it’s a healthy choice and it feels like a treat rather than an indulgence.

“I work out because I love my body, not because I hate it,” she affirms. “To try to achieve an unrealistic expectation for yourself, whether that’s a body type, pant size, or a number on the scale, is not the answer.”

“I think that if you focus on a higher level of self-love for yourself and a greater purpose is what’s really going to make a difference.” However, Green emphasizes that it is totally okay to have an aesthetic goal and want to look or feel good in a certain outfit. The focus instead needs to be on finding the happiest and healthiest version of yourself as you work on who you’re becoming.

This shift in mindset is what the team at BODi calls “Health Esteem,” rather than “self-esteem.” Your Health Esteem is loving who you are, right where you are, as you focus on the person you’re becoming. “I think that’s what life is all about,” Green continues.

She shares that her desire to uplift and motivate others comes primarily from her mother’s philosophy when it came to tupperware. “One of her ways of spreading joy was to bake treats, and she always would give it to people in tupperware,” she says. “In the tupperware, she would always write, ‘return to BJ,’ and she taught me to never return a tupperware empty. To me, that is how we should be in life with one another. To return people better than you found them and to fill them up.”

Green is the first curvy, black, female Super Trainer that BODi has had, and she describes it as a dream. “It still gives me goosebumps,” she says.

“The community and opportunities here are so great. Plus being able to be that representation for so many women and people that reach out and tell me it’s made such a difference for them to see me in this role and just loving who I am and wearing crop tops and just having fun with fitness. It’s absolutely a dream come true. When you can help somebody find that inner love for themselves, I think that’s really what it’s all about,” she concludes.

Formerly known as Beachbody, BODi has over 125 programs from beginner level to advanced, with hits like P90X and INSANITY.
