Renowned figure skater Adam Rippon knows exactly what it feels like to want to live your best life every single day. “I want to feel good and I want to look good,” he exclusively told Life & Style Weekly in a new interview, and who doesn’t agree?! Adam achieved a healthier lifestyle by turning his insecurities into “something positive” and by doing this, he gained control of his life.

“I always try to twist [my insecurities] around to be something positive and I think this is a really good example of how I brainwashed myself and started believing in myself,” he said. “But I’m a huge believer in ‘Fake it till you make it.’”

Thanks to Adam’s new way of thinking, he now has “trouble naming” his insecurities. “I let it go and would remind myself of the things I thought I was good at,” he revealed. “I think that I can be funny, I think that I can be charming so I focus on those things and then the insecurities that I had, they started to be less and less.”

After representing the US in the 2018 Winter Olympics and winning a bronze medal in the team event, Adam may seem like he has it all, but he explained that there was a time when he was obsessed with his weight and would constantly step on a scale to see if he was losing any pounds. But once he focused on the “feeling” of his dreams, everything changed for him.

“If you focus on that you start to really like what you see in the mirror and then you start to realize you always had the body of your dreams,” he explained. “And I think when we really focus on the mind, everything kind of comes together after that but when you focus on the body, I think you’ll always see something that you don’t like. ‘An arm can be bigger, a waist can always be smaller, I can always have longer hair or straighter hair’ and it’s always going to be something but if you focus on that feeling, you’re able to look in the mirror and be like, ‘I really like what I see looking back.’”

This past November, Adam announced his retirement from competitive figure skating by writing a letter to his younger self. He wrote, “You are going through a really tough time right now. You’ve just missed qualifying for the Olympic team for the second time in a row. You feel confused and you feel like a failure. It might not make sense right now, but this is truly one of the most important moments in your life.”

Adam continued, “You work so hard, but you are even harder on yourself. Now, listen, this part is important: Stand up, walk to a mirror, look yourself straight in the eye and tell yourself: you are a winner. You won’t see one looking back at you yet, but do this every day and you’ll really start to learn what being a winner is. Being a winner is a mindset.”

Since Adam is not skating competitively anymore, he still keeps himself in tip-top shape by using his two most “reliable” Cold & Flu medicines, Vicks DayQuil and NyQuil SEVERE with VapoCOOL. “I could take that and it wouldn’t ruin my diet,” he gushed. “I wouldn’t feel drowsy, I could still be active.”
