Plan Ahead: The Best Time to Get Your Thanksgiving Groceries

Thanksgiving is almost here, which means it’s time to grocery shop your way to a fabulous Thanksgiving meal.

But what’s the best time to do your shopping?

The ideal time to hit the stores is Monday before Thanksgiving at 8:00 a.m., when stores are typically the least busy.

While Monday may feel a little early to pick up ingredients for Thursday’s feast, it can be worth the trip to avoid the large crowds that tend to appear later in the week.

Tuesday and Wednesday are likely going to be the busiest grocery days leading up to Thanksgiving, so expect crowded aisles, long checkout lines, and limited parking.

If you must shop on these days, try going early in the morning or later in the evening when stores tend to be less hectic.

It’s best to skip the weekend as Real Simple says that Saturdays between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. are the busiest times to visit the grocery store.

Many stores also have adjusted holiday hours, and some may close early on Thanksgiving Day itself. Be sure to check your store’s hours in advance so you don’t get stuck without ingredients.

Additional Tips for Stress-Free Thanksgiving Shopping:

  • Make a list: Write down all ingredients and quantities so you don’t forget anything.
  • Consider pre-prepped or frozen options: Many grocery stores offer pre-cut vegetables, ready-made sides, or frozen desserts to save time.
  • Stock up on staples early: Items like butter, sugar, flour, and canned goods are best bought ahead of time to avoid last-minute shortages.
  • Shop online or curbside: If available, online ordering or curbside pickup can save you time and stress while still getting everything you need.
