Demi Lovato Just Let ‘Poot’ Out — and Officially Won Halloween: See the Hilarious Transformation

Demi Lovato has officially let Poot out of the basement for Halloween.

The “Skyscraper” singer, 34, took to Instagram to unveil her hilarious transformation into her viral alter ego, Poot, complete with eerie lighting, pale makeup, and the same infamous angle that started it all. “happy halloween and happy one week of intd!!! been so locked in this era thought i’d let pootvato out 🔒🤍,” Demi captioned her post, referencing her new album It’s Not That Deep.

For the uninitiated, Poot Lovato became an internet legend back in 2015 after a fan posted a washed-out photo of Demi on Tumblr, joking that it was her secret twin sister who’d been “locked in a basement her whole life.” The image exploded online — and so did the meme.

“When Poot went viral, that actually sucked because I thought that was a real picture of me,” Demi told Harper’s BAZAAR at the time. “And I was like, ‘Oh, no. That’s a really bad angle.’ But Poot was photoshopped. Later, I felt better about it because I realized that wasn’t my face.”

She admitted that while it was strange seeing the meme take off, she’s learned to laugh about it. “It was definitely weird when it went viral,” Demi said, adding that “it’s really funny to look back on.”

And this year, she’s fully embracing the joke. Earlier in April, Demi teased fans with a TikTok lip-sync to the caption, “When someone asks me to let Poot out of the basement…” and mouthed, “Wow, what an offer.” Her caption at the time? “And I’m never letting her out.” Clearly, she changed her mind — at least for Halloween.

The pop star has been on a creative high lately, celebrating the release of her ninth studio album, It’s Not That Deep. “With this album, I wanted it to be more celebratory,” she told Good Morning America’s Nightline. “I wanted people to have fun listening to it because I’m in a place in my life today where I’m having fun.”

Demi also credited her husband, Jordan Lutes — whom she married in May — for inspiring her current upbeat sound. “Falling in love with him changed my sound,” she explained. “I was like, I’m gonna go make another rock album and as I was making it I was like, wait, I’m really happy.”
