Did JJ From ‘Outer Banks’ Die in Real Life? Inside Rudy Pankow’s Exit After Character’s Tragic End
Rudy Pankow’s character on Outer Banks, JJ, died at the end of season 4, leaving fans curious about if something happened to the actor in real life too.
Did JJ From ‘Outer Banks’ Die in Real Life?
The actor who plays JJ did not die in real life. JJ’s death was strictly a storyline for the show, which showrunners said had been in the works long before it was written into the season 4 finale script.
“We were pretty sure early on that this was where it was going,” Shannon Burke told Cosmopolitan. “We thought that one of the Pogues would die almost in the very beginning in season 1, and we were pretty sure it was going to be JJ. We just didn’t know when we were going to play that card.”
In a separate interview with Teen Vogue, Shannon added, “We had talked to Rudy about his character dying in Kiara’s (Madison Bailey) arms in season 2 or 3 and we just said, ‘[It’s] way in the future.’ We didn’t really know when we were going to play that card. It was a much more abstract thing at the time. But he seemed interested in that and thought that it would be a good way to go out.”
Rudy also spoke about JJ’s death after the finale aired. “When I first found out JJ was gonna risk it all and not make it, I understood it,” he confirmed to Tudum. “And the risks got bigger and bigger and the stakes got higher and higher.”
How Did JJ Die in ‘Outer Banks’?
JJ died when he was stabbed by his biological father, Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane), in Morocco.
Earlier in the episode, JJ found out that Groff had betrayed him by setting him up for the murder of Hollis Robinson (Brianna Brown). When he had the opportunity to help Chandler out of the bottom of a dried-up well, he chose to walk away instead as payback for Groff’s betrayal.
Chandler eventually escaped the well and was on the hunt for the blue crown, just like the Pogues. JJ was able to retrieve the invaluable artifact first, but he and his girlfriend, Kiara, were intercepted by Groff, who took Kiara hostage and held her at knifepoint. JJ gave up the crown in exchange for Kiara’s life.
Before taking off with the crown, though, Chandler got his revenge on JJ for leaving him in the well. He stabbed him in the stomach, causing JJ to bleed out as Kiara held him.
Why Did They Kill JJ in ‘Outer Banks’?
The showrunners decided to kill JJ to set up a season 5 storyline of revenge against Chandler Groff for the rest of the Pogues.
“It sets the stage for an epic fifth and final season,” Josh Pate told Tudum. “We’re planning a story of redemption and a season that embodies the friendship that JJ had come to represent. JJ’s death was a hard but necessary piece of the architecture for the story and we plan on honoring that as much as we can.”
The creators also knew they wanted a way to show just how loyal the Pogues are to each other, and JJ giving up the blue crown proved that he cared more about his chosen family than the treasure. “At some point, this had to happen in order to justify P4L [Pogues for life],” Jonas Pate explained. “There’s definitely a sense of morality that runs through the show. John B (Chase Stokes) talks about it all the time. They’re willing to give up anything for each other and this is the ultimate example of that.”
