In his first interview since the Las Vegas shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, Jason Aldean is sharing his memories from that tragic night. The country crooner was performing on Oct. 1 when a gunman started shooting into the crowd — killing 58 people and injuring 546.

For Jason, at first, he thought the loud noise was just an equipment malfunction. “So when it first happened, I thought a speaker had blown,” he told the Today Show in a clip of the upcoming interview. “It just sounded like a crackling something. And so, I’m kind of looking around like, ‘What is that?’ [and] trying to figure out what it is. And then it stopped, so I was like, they must have got it fixed, so I kept doing my thing.”

He continued, “I was actually getting kind of aggravated, so I looked over at the monitor guy on the side of the stage, and I was like, ‘What is that? And fix it.’ And when I turned and looked, my guitar player had run behind me and was telling me to move, like, ‘Let’s go.’ And my security guy was running on stage, telling me to run.”

Jason, 40, who is currently expecting a baby boy with wife Brittany Kerr, released a statement shortly after the terrorist attack. “Over the last 24 hrs I have gone through lots of emotions. Scared, Anger, Heartache, Compassion and many others. I truly don’t understand why a person would want to take the life of another,” he tweeted. “I am so sorry for the hurt and pain everyone is feeling right now and there are no words I can say to take that pain away. Just know u all are in my heart and my prayers as we all go through this together. Time to come together and stop the hate!”
