Colorado Man Awaiting Trial for His Wife’s Murder Makes Bond Thanks to Supporters

Barry Morphew, who is currently awaiting trial in his wife Suzanne Morphew’s death, is expected to be released from the Alamosa County jail in Alamosa, Colorado, after a fundraiser was launched to help him raise enough money to post his $3 million bond.

His attorney, David Beller, said that Barry’s supporters pulled together the bond fee, which is about 10 percent of the $3 million bond set by the court, according to CPR. While Beller confirmed his client raised enough money to hire a bondsman to post bail, he did not identify the supporters.

“They have asked to remain anonymous,” Beller said of the supporters. “And that frankly is for their own safety, with all the vitriol that the case has brought and all the doxing.”

Beller added that the Morphew family, including his two daughters, have faced threats and bullying following his arrest. His daughters have stood by his side ever since Suzanne first went missing on Mother’s Day in 2020.

Barry is expected to be released on Friday, October 31, or Saturday, November 1, once he is fitted with a GPS monitor and finds a place to live, according to the Alamosa Citizen. He will be ordered to stay in his home, though he can attend legal and medical appointments. Additionally, Barry will be allowed to leave his home for work if he finds employment and is granted permission from the court.

Beller said that Barry “remains hopeful” about the future of his case. “He is discouraged by his inability to be able to publicly address the allegation against him. He’s concerned about the welfare of his family, specifically his girls,” he said.

The attorney also said that Barry will begin paying for his own defense once he’s released from jail, as his attorneys were originally paid by the state because a defendant is considered indigent if they are in custody.

Barry was first arrested for Suzanne’s murder in 2021. However, the prosecution struggled to meet deadlines for producing evidence as Suzanne’s body was not immediately found. The charges against Barry were dropped before his trial began, with it being noted that the case could be refiled if new evidence emerged.

Suzanne’s body was eventually found in 2023 in Alamosa County. An autopsy was conducted in 2024 and a unique mixture of animal tranquilizer chemicals were found in her system, which Barry was known to possess.

A grand jury indicted Barry on murder charges in June, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. He was arrested in Arizona while he was living under the alias of Lee Moore.
