Meghan Trainor Responds to ‘Toxic Mom Group’ Rumors With Humor and TikTok Clip
Meghan Trainor is weighing in lightly on the recent buzz surrounding an alleged “toxic” celebrity mom group.
On Thursday, January 8, the 32-year-old singer addressed the chatter for the first time by posting a playful TikTok after Ashley French’s viral The Cut essay sparked widespread conversation.
The essay detailed French’s experience with a former mom friend group she described as unhealthy, and Trainor has been rumored to be among its members.
Rather than offering a direct statement, Trainor chose humor. In the video, she sits at her computer typing before reacting with shock, as text across the screen reads, “Me finding out about the apparent mom group drama.”
The clip is soundtracked by her upcoming single, “Still Don’t Care,” from her forthcoming album Toy with Me, set for release on April 24.
She kept the tone cheeky in the caption as well, writing, “☕️☕️☕️ #stilldontcare.”
In her widely shared essay, French, who shares daughter Emerson, 15 months, and son Jupiter, 4, with husband Christopher French, opened up about why she ultimately walked away from the mom friend group last year.
The High School Musical actress explained that the dynamic began to mirror the social pressures of her own experience in high school, leaving her feeling isolated and uncomfortable.
She wrote in the essay that she initially felt grateful to have found a community of women navigating motherhood at the same stage, describing the early days as feeling like she had “found my village.” Over time, however, that sense of belonging began to fade.
French noticed herself growing further distant within the group, with fewer invitations and moments where she felt intentionally left out including being excluded from a gathering planned during her own daughter’s birthday celebration.
As the toxic behavior continued, she said the experience chipped away at her confidence, making her feel as though she wasn’t “cool enough” to belong in the group and ultimately prompting her to step away from them altogether.
The toxic mom group, according to fans, allegedly included actresses and singers, Hilary Duff, Mandy Moore, Trainor and more.
After Ashley’s piece was published, Duff’s husband, Matthew Koma, appeared to respond less subtly to the situation by sharing a photo mirroring the image of French used in her The Cut essay.
On January 6, Koma posted an Instagram Story showing himself seated on a couch beside a houseplant, dressed in all black and sporting rose-tinted sunglasses.
Koma overlayed The Cut’s logo and a fictional headline on the photo, which read: “When You’re the Most Self-Obsessed Tone-Deaf Person on Earth, Other Moms Tend to Shift Focus to Their Actual Toddlers,” with a subheadline stating, “A Mom Group Tell-All Through a Father’s Eyes.” He captioned the Instagram Story, “Read my new interview with @TheCut.”
According to TMZ, French’s rep denied the rumors in a Monday, January 5, statement, reiterating that French was not referring to Moore, Duff, or Trainor in her essay.
The rep added that Ashley had wanted her piece to spotlight an issue that other women can relate to, like being shut out of a friend group.
