South Carolina College Student Found Dead After Being Reported Missing After Halloween

Updated on November 13:

A 19-year-old college student in Charleston, South Carolina was found dead after he was reported missing, with police saying he hasn’t been seen since Halloween.

Owen Tillman Kenney’s deceased body was found in the water near Patriots Point around 8:45 a.m. on November 8, the Charleston Police Department confirmed.

“I would like to thank everyone who took part in the effort to get Owen back to his family,” Charleston Police Chief Chito Walker said in a statement, noting that it’s believed he took his own life. “We hope this recovery brings some measure of closure to a family experiencing unimaginable loss. We ask that everyone continue to respect the privacy of the Kenney family during this difficult time.”

The Charleston Police Department confirmed in a statement that Kenney was last seen by friends around 2 a.m. near his school, the College of Charleston, on October 31. Detectives have confirmed that he was seen walking alone onto the Ravenel Bridge pedestrian walkway around 3 a.m. after he left his friends.

“His cell phone’s last recorded location was also on the Ravenel Bridge around that same time,” the Charleston Police Department said in an update shared on Tuesday, November 4.

According to authorities, Kenney was last seen by his friends wearing a green and white Boston Celtics Halloween costume. However, the update on November 4 said that “subsequent evidence now confirms that he was wearing a black hooded jacket, light-colored pants, and black Nike sneakers with white soles.”

“At this time, there is no reason to believe that there is any danger to the campus community in relation to this case,” the department continued.

Police have enlisted K9 units, drones and an underwater recovery team amid the search. Charleston detectives are also working with the FBI and New Jersey State Police amid the investigation into Kenney’s disappearance.
