Two Men Arrested After Setting Off Explosion at Harvard Medical School With Roman Candle Firework

The FBI announced that two men from Massachusetts have been arrested in connection to an explosion that happened in the middle of the night at Harvard Medical School.

Logan David Patterson, 18, and Dominick Frank Cardoza, 20, were taken into custody in the early hours of Tuesday, November 4, according to ABC News. Federal prosecutors said they have each been charged with one count of conspiracy to damage, by means of an explosive.

The explosion took place on the fourth floor of the Goldenson Building just before 3 a.m. on Saturday, November 1, officials said. No one was injured amid the incident.

The explosive detonated inside of a wooden research laboratory locker. The explosive is believed to be a Roman candle firework, according to U.S. attorney for the District of Massachusetts Leah Belaire Foley.

Meanwhile, FBI Boston Special Agent in Charge Ted Docks said that Patterson and Cardoza intended to commit an “extremely dangerous act.” He added that the incident was “not some harmless college prank,” and is instead a “federal crime.”

Docks went on to note that there could have been casualties if people were in the building at the time of the explosion.

Patterson and Cardoza are not students at Harvard University, and it’s believed they were visiting the nearby Wentworth Institute of Technology for Halloween parties at the time they set off the explosion.

“This investigation is ongoing,” Docks said, per ABC News. “There is no evidence of any ongoing threat to the university or to the public.”

Surveillance cameras captured the two suspects concealing their identities in face coverings as they near the medical school in the early hours of November 1. They were seen lighting what appeared to be Roman candle fireworks in the footage. Foley also explained that the suspects got into the building by allegedly climbing scaffolding and gaining access to the roof.

Shortly after the suspects were seen on camera, campus police were alerted to a fire alarm that was set up from the explosion that occurred on the fourth floor of the building.
