Who Is Rama Duwaji? Meet Zohran Mamdani Wife and New York City’s First Gen Z First Lady

New York City’s about to get its first Gen Z First Lady! Rama Duwaji, the 28-year-old wife of Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, may prefer to stay behind the scenes, but she’s quietly been one of the biggest creative forces in his political rise.

According to CNN, Rama was the creative mind behind her husband’s campaign branding — from the eye-catching yellow, orange and blue color palette to the bold, modern typography that became synonymous with his run. She also played a huge role in shaping Zohran’s social media and digital strategy, all while being his biggest cheerleader every step of the way.

Though she kept a low profile throughout his campaign, Rama made a rare public appearance on June 24, standing proudly beside Zohran as he delivered his Democratic primary victory speech. That same day, she posted a sweet photobooth strip of them on Instagram with the caption, “Couldn’t possibly be prouder.”

Now, as she prepares to take on her new role as NYC’s First Lady, fans are curious to know more about the woman who’s helping lead the city into a new era.

Where Is She From?

Rama Duwaji was born on June 30, 1997, in Houston, Texas, to Syrian Muslim parents who immigrated from Damascus. Though she’s now a true New Yorker, Rama has often credited her multicultural background for influencing her creative perspective and passion for storytelling.

What University Did She Attend?

Education has always been important to Rama. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Communication Design from Virginia Commonwealth University, before heading to New York City to complete a master’s degree in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts. Clearly, she’s got both brains and artistic flair!

What Does She Do for a Living?

When she’s not standing beside Zohran at campaign events, Rama is busy building her career as a successful illustrator and animator based in Brooklyn. Her impressive portfolio includes work with The New Yorker, The Washington Post, BBC, Apple, Spotify, VICE, and even the Tate Modern. She also creates handmade ceramics, proving her creativity truly knows no bounds.

According to CNN, she played a key role in designing her husband’s campaign visuals — and her artistic eye clearly paid off!

How Did Her and Zohran Meet?

Their love story is straight out of a modern rom-com. During a June appearance on The Bulwark podcast, Zohran revealed that he met Rama on the dating app Hinge — joking there’s “still hope in those dating apps.” The two hit it off instantly and went public with their relationship a few years later.

They got engaged in October 2024 when Zohran posted a photo of Rama with a ring emoji and the hashtag #hardlaunch. The couple later tied the knot in early 2025 in a civil ceremony at the City Clerk’s Office before celebrating with friends and family.
