Life & Style can confirm that Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo have split after dating for almost two years. The breakup came the night before Jessica's 29th birthday, last Friday.

"She's pretty bummed and sad," a friend of Jessica's tells Life & Style. "They weren't good anymore [and] fighting. He's away a lot, she's getting ready to work on a new project. It became obvious they just weren't meant to be."

Meanwhile Tony, the Dallas Cowboys' quarterback, has been hanging around in LA, according to the friend. "I think he was acting like a single guy before he ever made it official."

The friend adds that Jess and Tony were at a golf event together in Maryland on July 1. "It wasn't an act, but they were having their problems. They were kind of off and on at that point."

But Jessica's still putting a good face on things. "Everyone needs to know that hope floats," she Twittered after the breakup. "Grab the strings and pull it back to you." A few hours later she wrote: "Please, Lord, give all of my beautiful fans, friends, enemies, and family rest. Bring all of us peace."

Coincidentally Jessica's ex-husband, Nick Lachey, is newly single also after he and girlfriend Vanessa Minnillo announced their split less than three weeks ago. "Jessica hasn't spoken to Nick," her friend says. "They don't talk."
