City Swipes Fluid Art Adventures: From Wall Street to Wanderlust, Carri Degenhardt Invites You to Get Messy

Carri Louise Degenhardt’s career journey is as colorful as the fluid art she now teaches. Trading pinstriped suits for paint-splattered aprons, the former Wall Street executive left the rigid world of business to embrace the vibrant chaos of acrylic pouring. Her Jersey City studio, City Swipes, is testament to this transformation – a haven for anyone seeking a splash of creative freedom. Now, Carri’s focus is expanding beyond her Jersey City studio. She’s setting her sights on bringing Swipes Wanderlust, her program of workshops, retreats, and art events, to new locations. Envision experimenting with swirling paints under the instruction of Carri Louise Degenhardt. While the original Cape May location is no longer the sole focus, the core elements of Swipes Wanderlust remain. Participants learn about color theory and fluid art techniques, all while soaking in the beauty of a new location. Carri also envisions a mobile studio that could bring the Swipes Wanderlust experience to various locations, making fluid art accessible to a wider audience.

Yet, despite the seemingly relaxed atmosphere, Carri’s sessions are meticulously structured. She combines playful exploration with a deep passion for the science underlying the art’s stunning visual effects. While fluid art might seem unpredictable, Carri emphasizes the importance of understanding the materials. There’s a misconception that fluid art is just random pouring. However, knowing how different mediums and tools interact empowers participants to create even more spectacular results.

This balance is evident in her workshops and the soon-to-launch retreat. Beginners and seasoned creatives alike can explore the mesmerizing world of fluid art, discovering techniques from classic “dirty pours” to intricate lacing effects. More structured offerings delve into color theory, composition, and the tools that help manipulate the paint’s expressive flow.

For some, the allure of fluid art lies in its therapeutic release. The joy of letting go and finding beauty in the unexpected offers a powerful antidote to the stresses of daily life. For others, it’s the spark of a new creative journey, perhaps even a side venture showcasing their work in the Swipes Wanderlust open-air gallery.

At the heart of it all is Carri’s contagious enthusiasm and the fostering of a welcoming community. Her studio in Jersey City has become a hub for fluid art lovers, a place where laughter mingles with the sounds of swirling paint. “It’s about more than just making art,”  Carri emphasizes.  “It’s about connection, inspiration, and reminding ourselves that it’s never too late to unleash our inner artist.”

Whether one is drawn to the vibrant colors, the meditative process, or the simple joy of getting a little messy, Carri Louise Degenhardt and the Swipes Wanderlust program is looking forward to share a creative adventure unlike any other.

Carri’s fluid art creations and other inspired products are available for collectors at her gallery: carrilouise.com. Furthermore, her personal creations are making their way into galleries and boutiques throughout the North East.
