Dr. Darla Shaw: From Adversity to Achievement
The founder of Talent Masters’ story of resilience, compassion, and trailblazing leadership.
Dr. Darla Shaw is a woman with both fierce determination and empathetic intelligence. Her eyes reflect a deep sense of purpose, steadfast commitment to change, and a tremendous sense of humor. And her company, Talent Masters, reflects exactly who Shaw is.
Talent Masters is reshaping the landscape of recruitment and HR consulting. But Dr. Shaw’s journey to success has been anything but conventional—it’s been a testament to resilience, perseverance, and the power of transformation.
Raised in the confines of a white supremacist cult, Dr. Shaw’s childhood was a struggle. From a young age, she witnessed firsthand the destructive power of hatred, prejudice, and discrimination, but she refused to let it define her. Instead, she embarked on a journey of self-discovery and enlightenment, determined to break free from the shackles of hate and intolerance.
“It was a challenge, to say the least,” Dr. Shaw recalls. “I was lucky that I went to public school and had exposure to other kids and ideas. By twelve, I knew that my family had it wrong, and I felt a lot of shame and discomfort. It took a while to be able to break away. But it taught me resilience and the importance of standing up for what’s right, no matter what.”
While her past doesn’t define her, it does drive her. Dr. Shaw has a passion for diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) and has dedicated her life to championing empathy and equality.
After breaking away from the cult, she forged a career in Human Resources and pursued a doctorate in organizational psychology, determined to use her knowledge and expertise to create positive change in the world.
In her career before Talents Masters, Dr. Shaw experienced the miracles that can happen when people meet face to face and have genuine and frank discussions. In her Team Therapy program, she witnessed a man with a Nazi tattoo cry and hug a black co-worker. She realized that every bridge can be crossed when people lead with their humanity and recognize the humanity in people who might even be their adversaries. This conviction inspires her work.
“I knew I wanted to make a difference,” Dr. Shaw explains. “I wanted to create work environments where people felt valued, respected, and empowered to be their authentic selves.”
In 2021, Dr. Shaw’s vision became a reality with the founding of Talent Masters, a women-owned company that is redefining the way organizations approach recruitment and talent management. Drawing upon her own experiences and insights, Dr. Shaw and her team of seasoned HR executives set out to challenge the status quo and offer a more holistic approach to hiring, retention, and growth.

“Our mission is simple: to unlock the magic provided by top talent and advance the growth journeys of organizations and professionals alike,” Dr. Shaw says with a smile. “But our journey has been anything but simple.”
From navigating financial constraints to overcoming the challenges of building a new business from the ground up, Dr. Shaw and her team faced numerous obstacles along the way. But through sheer determination, they persevered, turning their vision into reality.
“We had to get creative,” Dr. Shaw admits. “We established our ‘culture first’ ethos, developed proprietary training programs, and even built our own Automated AI RPO system. At every turn, we have found ways to deliver creative solutions that solve our client’s problems.”
One dramatic solution? Deciding to turn the process of recruiting on its head and creating a process where they focus on retention before hiring. By emphasizing “culture first” when hiring for companies, they facilitate wins for their clients.
“Rather than just putting ‘butts in seats’ like the other companies, Talent Masters decided to follow the ‘Hire, Retain, Grow’ model. By matching employees to the culture, more than 80% of our hires stay at least three years,” she reports.
These are lessons that Dr. Shaw used in building her own team.
“Sometimes people equate ‘culture’ with sameness. But that is not true. Culture is how you think and work. Our team has a wide range of neuro, physical, political, and religious differences. We are the definition of DEIB,” Dr. Shaw laughs. “But we all thrive in the culture at Talent Masters.”
Talent Masters is a testament to Dr. Shaw’s resilience and tenacity, a resource for organizations seeking to create inclusive and thriving workplace cultures. But for Dr. Shaw, the journey is far from over.
