This Is Not a Drill!‘Are You Afraid of the Dark?’ Is Being Made Into a Movie!

Attention ’90s kids! The Nickelodeon show that brought all your nightmares to life, better known as Are You Afraid of the Dark?, is being made into a movie. And to make sure it is scarier than ever, Paramount Pictures has hired It screenwriter Gary Dauberman to pen the script.

We were already grabbing our flashlights after The Hollywood Reporter shared the major movie news — and as imaginary members of The Midnight Society, we can’t wait. “The show is about the shared experience of telling stories — especially scary ones,” Gary told the publication. “We’re going to celebrate that with this movie and honor the darker, scarier tone of the show, which was really groundbreaking for Nickelodeon at the time. I hope the Midnight Society approves.”

As expected, millennials are freaking out on social media about the revival of the scary series. “They are making an Are You Afraid Of The Dark? movie! Hell yeah! I can’t wait! In the 90s I wanted to be a member of The Midnight Society. If I’m being honest, I still do,” one fan tweeted before another added, “It’s about time. I’m shocked we hadn’t got a new movie/series sooner.”

If you don’t remember Are You Afraid of the Dark, the show centered around a group of kids, known as The Midnight Society, who gathered around a campfire to tell scary stories. The show ran on Nickelodeon for 10 years, between 1990 and 2000. Recently, the cast had a reunion — and fans got to catch up with Midnight Society leader Ross Hull (aka Gary), who is now a meteorologist in Toronto.

“Thanks for a terrifying and nostalgically awesome night everyone,” he wrote following the event. “Keep being such bright lights but don’t be scared to be afraid of the dark!!” A release date has not been announced.
