Avoid This Common Food to Reduce Your Risk of Cancer
Food plays a major role in our overall health, and certain items can influence our risk of developing cancer, making it more important than ever to understand how our everyday choices impact long-term wellness.
While this particular food item may seem harmless, research shows that even small amounts eaten regularly can significantly increase the risk of certain types of cancer.
According to an article from TODAY.com, Maya Vadiveloo, Ph.D., a registered dietitian and associate professor of nutrition at the University of Rhode Island, previously shared that if she had to single out one food to avoid, it would be processed meat.
The American Institute for Cancer Research notes that “even small amounts of processed meat eaten regularly increase the risk of colorectal cancer.”
Common examples include bacon, sausage, hot dogs, pepperoni, ham, corned beef, and cold cuts like bologna and salami.
If you frequently include these meats in your breakfasts, sandwiches, or barbecues, consider swapping them for alternatives like rotisserie chicken or freshly sliced turkey.
Processed meats that are smoked, cured, salted, or made with added nitrites can form compounds that may contribute to cancer development. The National Cancer Institute also reports evidence linking processed meat to a higher risk of stomach cancer.
Registered dietitian and TODAY nutrition editor Natalie Rizzo added in the article that many deli meats are high in saturated fats, which are “linked to things like higher risk of cancer, higher risk of heart disease, higher cholesterol, and higher blood pressure.”
If you want to get your protein elsewhere but still enjoy salads and sandwiches, consider swapping meat for chickpeas, tofu, or eggs. You can also mix in lentils, black beans, edamame, or hummus for a satisfying, protein-rich boost.
For sandwiches, options like avocado, nut butters, or mozzarella can add creaminess and keep you full, while quinoa or roasted vegetables make great additions to salads without relying on processed meats.
Remember, eating healthy doesn’t have to be difficult. Small changes, like swapping processed meats for plant-based proteins or lean alternatives, can make a big difference over time—without sacrificing flavor or enjoyment.
