A source tells Life & Style that NBC execs "really wanted an on-screen proposal" from Blake Shelton, but that the country crooner refused, mainly because the high-profile couple's relationship has hit a major rough patch.
The source shares that the duo, who've been dating since 2015, were being pushed "to act very affectionate and playful with each other" while appearing on the hit singing competition, despite the fact that they're contemplating a split.
“Off-set, [Gwen's] miserable," the source adds.
In fact, issues between the singers is nothing new. "Gwen and Blake began to argue more. Then she started to realize they’re just too different to spend the rest of their lives together," a different insider told Life & Style previously. Even the blonde beauty's ex-husband, Gavin Rossdale has gotten involved.
"Gavin is a very concerned parent and wants to be sure Gwen and Blake aren't arguing in front of [their three] boys," the insider said. "And he has concerns over how the boys would handle a breakup… [Gwen] wants the world to think everything is perfect with Blake. But that's just not the case anymore."
It's no wonder Gwen didn't want to rush into anything with Blake given the nasty end to her and Gavin's 13-year marriage. "It's the worst thing that can happen to me besides death," she previously told PrideSource about her divorce.
"My whole life all I wanted to do was be a mother and a wife, and I had the dream of having this family because that's what I had," the 47-year-old said. "I have parents who've been married since high school, who are in love, and they're still in love… I had a perfect example, so it's super tragic for me. My dreams are shattered and I feel so embarrassed about what happened."
