Costco Recalls Nearly 1 Million Kirkland Prosecco Bottles Over Shattering Risk

If you recently picked up a bottle of bubbly from Costco for the holidays, you may want to check your pantry.

The retail giant has issued a major recall on its Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG, after reports surfaced of bottles bursting or shattering unexpectedly.

According to a November 6 notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), approximately 941,400 bottles are affected. The importer and distributor, F&F Fine Wines International, Inc., has received 10 reports of bottles bursting, including one injury.

The recalled prosecco bottles were sold for about $8 at Costco stores across Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin between April and August 2025.

The recall follows a similar notice issued by Costco nearly two months ago, warning that unopened bottles could shatter even when not being handled. Affected products can be identified by UPC code 196633883742 and Costco item number 1879870.

Consumers are urged not to open the affected bottles. The CPSC advises disposing of them immediately in regular household trash to prevent potential injury.

While recalls on wine and spirits are relatively rare, this isn’t the first time Costco has had to alert customers to a potential issue with a beverage product. The retailer has previously pulled items ranging from frozen foods to imported snacks due to contamination or packaging defects.

If you’re planning your holiday party shopping list, it might be best to double-check your prosecco stash before you pop any corks.

Customers seeking a refund can contact Ethica Wines for instructions on how to return the product and receive reimbursement through Costco.
