DermaRite Expands Skincare Recall Due to Life-Threatening Bacteria Concerns: What Products Are Affected and Why
If you’ve recently stocked up on DermaRite personal care products, it’s time to double-check your shelves. More items from the manufacturer have been recalled due to potential contamination that could pose a serious health risk.
The recall saga began on August 9 when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that four DermaRite products were being pulled nationwide. Just weeks later, on August 27, DermaRite expanded the recall to include additional products “out of an abundance of caution” after discovering a potential Burkholderia cepacia complex contamination.
The company shared an update in a September 8 press release, writing, “Our team has been working diligently to assist impacted customers as a result of this voluntary product recall, and we are actively implementing measures to ensure resolution.” They added, “We recognize the impact this situation may have caused and sincerely regret any inconvenience. Restoring full product availability is our highest priority.”
Why Were DermaRite Products Recalled?
The recall was issued due to potential contamination with Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc), a bacteria that can pose serious health risks. “Burkholderia cepacia complex in these products may result in serious and life-threatening infections if the products are used by immunosuppressed individuals or by people attending to immunosuppressed individuals,” DermaRite explained.
Even healthy individuals may be at risk. Using contaminated products on minor skin lesions “may result in local infections,” the company noted. For those with compromised immune systems, the infection could spread to the bloodstream, “potentially leading to life-threatening sepsis.”
Which DermaRite Products Were Recalled?
On August 27, DermaRite announced that the voluntary recall was expanded to include a wide range of personal care items, all set to expire on or before August 2027. The recalled products include:
3-N-1, 4-N-1, Clean-N-Free, DermaCerin, DemaDaily, DermaFungal, DermaKleen, DemaKlenz, DermaMed, DermaRain, DermaSarra, DermaSyn, DermaVantage, DermaVera, Gel Rite, Hand E Foam, KleenFoam, Lantiseptic, LubriSilk, PeriFresh, PeriGiene, PeriGuard, Renew Hair and Body Wash, Renew Dimethicone, Renew Full Body Wash & Shampoo, Renew Periprotect, Renew Skin Repair, San-E-Foam, TotalBath, TotalFoam, UltraSure, WhirlBath.

DermaRite clarified in its September 8 statement that the recall does not affect all of its products, specifically excluding wound care and nutritional items.
If you own any of the recalled products, stop using them immediately and check DermaRite’s website for guidance on returning or disposing of affected items.
