Andrew Garfield Gets Candid About His Sexuality: “I Have an Openness to Any Impulses”
Last year, Andrew Garfield made headlines for saying he was a “gay man… without the physical act.” After experiencing a good amount of push-back as a result of his comments, he wants to clarify his previous statement. The actor — who is currently playing a gay man in Angels in America — recently spoke to Out Magazine about his sexuality.
“Up until this point, I’ve only been sexually attracted to women,” he explained. “My stance toward life, though, is that I always try to surrender to the mystery of not being in charge. I think most people — we’re intrinsically trying to control our experience here, and manage it, and put walls around what we are and who we are. I want to know as much of the garden as possible before I pass — I have an openness to any impulses that may arise within me at any time. But, if I were to identify, I would identify as heterosexual.”
As most fans of the Brit know, he famously dating his The Amazing Spider-Man co-star, Emma Stone for nearly four years before splitting in 2015. After briefly sparking reunion rumors last year, some fans still hold out hope that the pair will get back together.
“They never stopped caring about each other,” a source close to the exes told People. “Even when they split, Emma and Andrew had great love and respect for each other.” In fact, Emma even supported Andrew during his role in Angels: “She was in the audience watching the show. She left backstage with him.”
While an Andrew/Emma reunion would be super exciting (to say the least) — we love Andrew’s candor when it comes to his sexuality. He added, “Being someone who identifies that way, and who’s taking on this seminal role, my scariest thought was, Am I allowed to do this?”
