‘Dancing With the Stars’ Jenna Johnson’s Abs Are Unreal — Here’s the Workout Routine Behind Her Sculpted Core
Jenna Johnson has been a mainstay on Dancing With the Stars since her Season 18 debut as a troupe member, and she’s been killing it ever since. Promoted to pro in 2016, the 31-year-old LA native has taken home the Mirrorball Trophy twice — first in Season 26 with Adam Rippon and then again last year with Joey Graziadei.
Growing up dancing in front of mirrors, Johnson admits she was extremely critical of her body from a young age. “I was so focused on the lines and shapes I was hitting in my craft,” she says. That focus made her struggle with body image for years, but over the past eight to 10 years, she says she’s finally learned to love herself.
Her journey hasn’t been all smooth sailing. She and husband, fellow DWTS pro Val Chmerkovskiy, suffered a miscarriage in 2021, which completely shook her. “I just remember loathing my body because I felt like it failed me … but once I got pregnant with my son in Rome [whom she and Chmerkovskiy welcomed in January 2023], I had never been so grateful and happy with the body that I was in,” she reflects. “It just felt like magic.”
Part of what keeps Johnson feeling strong and confident is her fitness routine. She hits the gym daily, not just for physical results, but for mental health too. “I am just a creature of routine, and so for me, waking up and going to the gym first thing in the morning is non-negotiable,” she says. “Even if I’m tired, I just know that I’m going to feel so much better [after] spending 30 minutes at the gym. I don’t do crazy workouts, it’s really just about consistency for me.”
Her favorite form of cardio? A treadmill workout that went viral on TikTok in 2020, known as 12-3-30. Johnson explains, “I just love walking and it really helps just calm my brain, get those endorphins going.”
And while treadmill time keeps her energized, Pilates is the secret behind Johnson’s sculpted abs. She’s a huge fan of mat and hot Pilates, saying, “I always felt like I needed to do these crazy HIIT workouts and lift a ton of weights, and really your own body is so capable of resistance and opposition, and you can get such an incredible workout just by using yourself.”
