Jessica Simpson’s Ex Eric Johnson ‘May Want to Defend Himself’ After She Takes ‘Brutal Shots’ in New Song
The split gets nastier! The lyrics in Jessica Simpson’s new song “Leave” are about an unfaithful partner, leading fans to speculate that the singer, 44, is hinting at what went down with her estranged husband Eric Johnson, 45. (Jessica, who announced their split after 10 years of marriage in January, called her album “an apology to myself for putting up with everything I did not deserve,” in an Instagram post.)
“She’s taking some really brutal shots,” a source exclusively tells Life & Style. “She doesn’t name him, but everyone is convinced she’s singing about Eric. But if she’s going to make him the villain in this public war, he may want to defend himself — and there are always two sides to every story.”
Jessica previously said she was going through “the deepest heartbreak of [her] life” when she was writing songs for her new album, Nashville Canyon: Part 1. “It was the most intense yet enlightening therapy I’ve ever been through,” the singer told The Cut. Now, after hearing her single “Leave,” some are convinced Jessica, 44, dropped a major clue as to why their 10-year marriage ended. “What we had was magic / Now you made it tragic / Giving her what you gave to me / Now the well that you drank from’s empty,” she sings before referencing a lover’s “unholy matrimony” on the track. “Did you do to her what you did to me? / Was she on her knees? / Oh, she’s everything but me.”
The fiery song sparked speculation that Eric had been unfaithful, and while Jessica has yet to address the cheating rumors, she did take to Instagram to thank fans for supporting the tune. “I urge everyone to allow yourselves to be empowered by heartbreak, to never stay quiet with your needs and to always know that love should demand respect,” she wrote.
