Luke Grimes Lands ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff ‘Y: Marshals’: Everything We Know About the Show
The Dutton family may have ventured off from their duties on their notorious Yellowstone ranch, but fans will see more of Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes, in Y: Marshals.
Life & Style breaks down everything to know about the Yellowstone spinoff, Y: Marshals.
What Is ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff ‘Y: Marshals’ About?
CBS announced the upcoming series during a May 2025 press release of their 2025-2026 Primetime Schedule.
“With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana.”
The youngest Dutton siblings’ new venture comes at a high price to pay, as “he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”
There were reports of Luke starring in a Yellowstone sequel two months before CBS made the official announcement.

Puck’s Matt Belloni reported the news on March 26, 2025, sharing that the spinoff was in pre-production and was a separate storyline from Dutton Ranch, the second Yellowstone sequel following the lives of Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler.
Luke Grimes Reacts to ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff ‘Y: Marshals’ Series
On May 8, 2025, Luke reacted to the news of landing the lead of the spinoff via Instagram.
“Cowboys don’t say goodbye, they say see you later,” Luke captioned the post, along with a photo of a news article sharing the news.
Fans shared their excitement in the comments section of the post, with one fan writing, “So hyped for this! Kayce was one of my favorite characters.”
CBS Didn’t Skimp on the ‘Y: Marshals’ Budget
CBS President Amy Reisenbach chatted about the budget with Deadline on May 7, 2025. The publication asked her if Y: Marshals would have an “expensive” feel like Yellowstone, to which she replied, “We don’t do cheap.”
“Spencer Hudnut had run a broadcast show before,” Reisenbach said. “We do have a budget for that show that is in line with other broadcast series.”
Luke Grimes Previously Expressed Interest in Leading a ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff
In December 2024, Luke addressed the possibility of spinoffs and if he’d take part in any sequels.
“There’s always talks of spinoffs. I’d do it [but] I just don’t understand how it would work once the story ends,” he told Deadline at the time. “Kayce wants to be a cowboy and be happy with his family. He doesn’t want to kill people anymore. He doesn’t want the weight of a huge mega ranch that isn’t sustainable in today’s times. He wants his little slice of heaven. It’s that simple.”

Luke was on a high while wrapping up the Yellowstone series finale and gushed that the second half of season 5 was the “easiest” to film without family patriarch John Dutton, played by Kevin Costner.
“Hopefully everyone can see that it was time,” Luke told Esquire at the time. “To be really honest, there was a part of Kevin being gone that meant some of the conflict was gone. Obviously, it didn’t make it super fun to be around. Not pointing any fingers, but it was actually the easiest season we’ve filmed.”
