Missing YouTube Fisherman’s Body Found Off Coast of Mexico 5 Days After Disappearance

The body of missing fisherman Mikey Rijavec, who documented his experiences and fishing adventures on YouTube, has been found in waters off the coast of Mexico five days after he was reported missing.

Rijavec, who was known for his YouTube channel SD Fish and Sips, first disappeared on November 11 when he was on a fishing trip off the coast of Baja California, Mexico. According to a GoFundMe page set up by his family, they were alerted that he was in trouble when he made a mayday call from his solo skiff.

Rijavec tried to fix engine issues with his boat, though the motor dislodged and caused the boat to flip, according to the GoFundMe. He was eventually able to flip the small boat over, though it had taken on water by the time he was able to get settled.

“We know nothing about what happened to Mikey after that,” the GoFundMe stated.

U.S. and Mexico authorities set out for search and rescue efforts with both boats and aircrafts to look for Rijavec. Additionally, his family hired local boats and private planes to help amid the search.

Rijavec’s brother, Gregory Rijavec, revealed the search ended on November 15. In an update on the GoFundMe page, he said that while there were “missing pieces and details to be confirmed” regarding Rijavec’s disappearance. However, the family was told by “those directly involved in the search” that they have had access “to the information as it was available and exhausted every effort.”

The YouTube creator’s boat was recovered during the four-day search, and his body wasn’t found until one day after the search ended on November 16. According to the GoFundMe page, Rijavec’s body was recovered in the water near San Cristobal.

“Mikey was mindful and present every day, and that allowed him to live a longer life than can be measured on a calendar,” Rijavec’s brother wrote via the GoFundMe page. “Mikey prepared us to deal with this, and if we live by his example, we will not only be OK, we will be better.”

The family also thanked everyone who helped look for Rijavec. “Everyone poured everything into finding Mikey, because whether they knew him or not, they knew a son, a brother, a friend, a fisherman, a fellow human needed help,” his brother wrote. “Everyone has been extremely selfless during this time, and selflessness is one of the greatest acts of love. We were united in the search and we are united in love.”

The GoFundMe page set a fundraising goal of $40,000, while it’s earned more than $46,000 as of time of publication.
