The 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards started off on the wrong foot — well, a wet one to be exact.

With rain and hail soaking the red carpet, sending celebs fleeing to avoid getting drenched, the show was already off to an unusual start.

Weather aside, there were several things about this year’s awards that were different. For one, they added “television” to its name, officially adding several new categories to represent TV — a first in the show’s 24-year history.

In addition to expanding its format to include TV, they also added several new categories: Best Documentary, Best Host, Best Reality Competition, Best Hero, Tearjerker, Next Generation, Best American Story, and Best Fight Against the System.

Although the MTV Movie Awards has always prided itself on being the less pretentious version of award shows, giving Movie of the Year awards to The Fast and the Furious movies instead of the usual Oscar bait, but this year they set aside their comical side to focus on important social issues.

For example, this year they finally got rid of their gendered Best Actor and Best Actress categories and combined them into one.

Emma Watson picked up the first gender-free award, one she called a very “proud” moment. And if you thought that was a mature moment for such an event, U.S. representative Maxine Waters showed up as well to present the Fight the System award.

But there were moments of humor, too. The show started off with an explosive Beauty and the Beast-themed opening number, with cameos from Hailee Steinfeld and Rebel Wilson.

There was also a hilarious moment between host Adam DeVine and Get Out‘s Allison Williams who sends him to “the sunken place,” a dark region where Stranger Things‘ Barb resides.
