Pop Princesses Tell All: Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo and Gracie Abrams’ Secrets

Secrets, sacrifices and scandals! Music‘s hottest young stars dish about the behind the scenes drama in their lives.

Chappell Roan Suffers for Stardom

The Best New Artist Grammy winner’s career is on fire, but fame has come at a steep price. “The vibe of this — stalking … yelling at you in public — is the vibe of an abusive ex-husband,” Chappell, who simply grew up as a music-loving kid in Missouri, told The Face. “I didn’t know it would feel this bad.” She shared with The Guardian that she’s been diagnosed with severe depression and is “in therapy twice a week.” A LGBTQ advocate, she’s been dubbed a “spoiled diva” for being so outspoken and not appearing fan friendly sometimes. “I’d be more successful if I was okay wearing a muzzle,” she joked to the BBC. But then she wouldn’t be Chappell!

Sabrina Carpenter Is Happily Making Messes

After years of following advice and churning out music for Disney’s Hollywood Records, Sabrina wanted to strike out on her own and “make some mistakes” on a more adult album. “To go through your life trying to be a little robot angel, you’re going to have a lot of regrets later,” she told Time about 2022’s “sad” Emails I Can’t Send. “That’s also why during that time of my life I was a little bit of an emotional wreck.” The candid “Espresso” singer — who has a high-profile romance and priest scandal under her glittering belt — isn’t divulging all of her secrets within lyrics, though. “I get why people are interested,” Sabrina noted to W of not naming names from her off-stage life. “But they can listen to my album and decide for themselves what the songs are about.”

Olivia Rodrigo Gave Up So Much

Working as a tween Disney star wasn’t easy. “In middle school, I was home-schooled,” Olivia told Billboard. “I spent most of it surrounded by 45-year-old men on a set and not with kids my own age in a school.” Making things worse, the “Good 4 U” singer revealed to Teen Vogue she was “treated like a child but expected to act like an adult,” and felt she wasn’t allowed to make mistakes. Olivia credits her parents and friends with keeping her grounded — including amid what she’s called “disappointing” plagiarism accusations (“I write all of my lyrics from my heart,” she insisted to Teen Vogue. “I came up with the lyrics.”). Therapy and journaling also help Olivia whenever things get overwhelming. “If I’m feeling anxious,” she explained to Vogue, “I’ll make a list of all the things I’m grateful for.”

Gracie Abrams Is More Than Just a Nepo Baby

When your father is J.J. Abrams, the filmmaker who rebooted both Star Trek and Star Wars, it’s safe to say you’ve got some industry connections. But Gracie has made it a point to succeed on her own terms. “I know how hard I work, and I know how separate I’ve kept [my dad] from every conversation about anything career-wise, but of course you can understand what it looks like from the outside,” she told Rolling Stone. Now the “Close to You” singer has her own big name connections like Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez!
