Sam Smith Begs Fans to Realize They ‘Are Enough’ in Heartfelt Message: ‘Trying to Seek Perfection Causes More Pain’
Say it louder for the people in the back! On Tuesday, August 20, Sam Smith sent a heartfelt message to fans that encouraged self-acceptance and love. The singer has been incredibly open with his struggles about his identity, body image and heartbreaks. Now, he wants to use his experiences to help others.
“Just wanted to share a little thought with you all. Sitting here on my first holiday in a long long time. Looking back on a year and a half of therapy and what has been probably the most challenging time of my short 27 years here,” the “Stay With Me” artist began a lengthy post on Instagram to accompany an image that read “I am enough.” During an interview with Jameela Jamil in March, Sam acknowledged that he started talking with a therapist this past year to “dig in deeper” and find out what triggers him to get “sad.”
His post continued by explaining the work he’s been putting into himself. “I’ve watched and read so much over the last [six] months to try and make sense of all the mess in my head. Tried to find ways to organise all of my problems so that they are bound and organised into folders and boxes so that they will never haunt me or [affect] me again.”
However, through his intensive self-searching, the Grammy winner divulged that the phrase “I am enough” is “the only words that really matter.” He admitted, “That mess in your mind is not a mess. It is who you are. By constantly trying to change and seek perfection and a life of no pain only causes more pain I am realising. Still on course and learning but feeling the closest I’ve ever felt to a real space of joy, gratitude and peace.”
Why did Sam decide to share such an intimate message about his struggles? The “Pray” singer hopes it will lift someone else up. “I know we are all dealing with some really heavy s—t at times. And I find listening to words from strangers comforting,” he confessed. The London native also encouraged followers to try a daily affirmation. “Now, every morning and every night before you go to bed. Say these words to yourself in the mirror. I’m gonna do it, [too]. We are in this together,” he concluded the post.
Thanks for spreading positivity, Sam!
