Heartbreaking. Sam Smith recently revealed during an interview with Jameela Jamil that he underwent liposuction at just 12 years old after being bullied at school. The singer keeps a relatively low profile, and it was surprising to see him open up in such a big way.

“I had more estrogen than many boys did in my chest … Yeah, I had breasts. I fully had breasts,” the 26-year-old recounted. “I had liposuction. At 12 years old, I had liposuction. [A one-day] operation, and it was a big thing.”

Cosmetic surgery as a preteen is extremely shocking, but, after all of that, the Grammy winning singer admitted that it didn’t help anything. He explained, “At the time, I think I was very happy about it. It didn’t really change anything. I think I put the weight back on in a few weeks because I hadn’t figured out my relationship with food. So, it didn’t really change anything, but being 12 years old and having liposuction in your chest is quite a big deal.”

Carrying extra weight in his chest was a huge point of pain for the “Lay Me Down” artist. “It was just the basis of all of my teasing, all of my bullying, my whole life because of my chest,” he admitted.

Sam shared an extremely painful story from his childhood about being body shamed. “I had horrible situations in school with guys. [One time] where a guy grabbed my chest once on the playground in front of all his friends. It was horrible. I guess, f—ked up,” he said.

Those memories are part of the reason why he’s becoming more outspoken about his struggles. The pop star divulged, “I started therapy a year ago which is why I think I’m doing this. I’m starting to dig in deeper and realize that’s partly why I get sad.”

Stay strong, Sam!
