When people see Lucy and Maria Aylmer, they have enough trouble believing that the two are sisters, let alone twins!

While Lucy was born with fair skin, freckles, red hair and blue eyes, Maria has caramel skin, black curls and dark brown eyes. Their opposite features can be traced back to their racially different parents, one of which is half-Jamaican while the other is white.

The youngest in a family of five children, the 18-year-old fraternal twins even differ from their other siblings. “Our brothers and sisters have skin which is somewhere between Maria and I,” Lucy tells the ‘Daily Mail.’ “We are at opposite ends of the spectrum and they are all somewhere in-between.”

Lucy adds of their mother, “It was such a shock for her because things like skin color don’t show up on scans before birth. She had no idea that we were so different. When the midwife handed us both to her she was just speechless.”

Maria and Lucy make the talk show rounds.

Though they’ve always been close, the pair’s personalities also couldn’t be more different. While Lucy is the self-described “shy one” who’s studying art and design at college, Maria is outgoing and interested in law.

And though they love their unique relationship, there’s a downside to looking like opposites — they could never switch places with one another!

But, “Maria loves telling people at college that she has a white twin. And I’m very proud of having a black twin,” Lucy tells the ‘Daily Mail.
