The decision to bring T.R. back to Shondaland came as the result of an informal dinner conversation between The Catch series regular Elvy Yost — a friend of T.R.’s — and showrunner Allan Heinberg.

“When I sat down at dinner with Elvy for the first time, she said, ‘I’m bringing love from T.R. Knight,'” Allan told The Hollywood Reporter. “I hadn’t heard from T.R. since he left, and she just opened the door to renewing our friendship.”

Grey’s fans remember T.R. as Dr. George O’Malley who began the series as one of the five interns alongside Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), who still star on the long-running medical drama. Dr. O’Malley however, had a tragic ending when he died in Season 6 after being hit by a bus.

The creators of The Catch are just as excited as fans to have T.R. back on the small screen.

“I just said to T.R., ‘Would you want to come on and play Alice’s [Mireille Enos] baby brother?'” Allan continued. “We all got back in touch and we all fell back in love.”

The Catch premieres tonight at 10 p.m. EST.
