USWNT Star Sophia Wilson Reveals Birth of 1st Child and Her Adorable Nickname

United States women’s national team star Sophia Wilson announced on Tuesday that she had welcomed a baby daughter with her husband of less than one year, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Michael Wilson.

Wilson, née Smith, revealed the happy news in an Instagram story with a closeup photo of the infant’s feet, simply writing over the image, “Hi world.” The Portland Thorns FC forward did not initially reveal more about their daughter, including her name or birth date.

The official Instagram account for her team also shared the image, captioning the post, “Wilson, party of three.”

On Wednesday, Wilson followed up with a grid photo of their baby girl, also revealing the child’s name. “Gianna Capri Wilson,” she shared. “My little Gigi, I don’t know how I ever lived in this world without you. Mama loves you more than you’ll ever know.”

The couple, who wed in January 2025, first announced that they were expecting a child in a March 5 Instagram post.

In the photos, Wilson appeared alongside her NFL star husband, dressed in casual, matching white shirts and holding ultrasound photos. “Life just keeps getting sweeter,” the 25-year-old wrote.

A few weeks later, Wilson confirmed the gender of the child in another post showing off her growing baby bump. “Filling the next months with lots of love while we wait for our baby girl to be here,” she gushed at the time.

The couple began dating in 2019 while they were both student-athletes attending Stanford University, where Wilson was an up-and-coming freshman with the football team and she was leading the women’s soccer team, according to People.

However, after finishing an abbreviated collegiate career after just two seasons as a two-time Pac-12 Champion and NCAA Champion, Wilson left Stanford in 2020 to join the National Women’s Soccer League, signing with the Portland Thorns.

This put the couple in a long-distance relationship, as Wilson stayed behind at Stanford for a fifth season.

Unfortunately, Wilson only played in six games his final year before suffering a season-ending injury. But even after missing half of the season, Wilson managed to catch 26 passes, 418 yards, and score four touchdowns, setting him apart as a standout player. He was eventually drafted to the Arizona Cardinals in the 2023 NFL Draft, after the team selected him in the third round, according to Stanford.

“You did it baby. Through the highs and especially the lows, you never stopped doing everything right,” Wilson wrote in a tribute to her future husband. “It hasn’t been easy but it’s been worth it. I’m so proud of you.”

Wilson likewise has a number of accolades in her professional career. After leading the Thorns to the NWSL Championship in 2022, the star forward was awarded the NWSL Most Valuable Player and Championship MVP that year, as well as being named the 2022 U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year.

Wilson also scored three goals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, helping take the gold for the United States women’s national team.
