White Lotus’ Sam Nivola Explains Why Lochlan Ratliff Used the Dirty Blender in Season 3 Finale
The White Lotus season 3 finale included three deaths, as well as one near-death experience when Sam Nivola’s character, Lochlan Ratliff, used a blender with a poisoned piña colada to make a smoothie. Many fans were confused why Lochlan wouldn’t clean out the blender before using it, and Sam shared his theory one day after the finale aired.
“I was expecting that Saxon had made a protein shake in it,” Sam, 21, said about Lochlan’s brother, Saxon Ratliff (played by Patrick Schwarzenegger), while appearing on the Monday, April 7, episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
The theory made sense, as Saxon used the blender to make protein shakes in previous episodes and he even demanded that they have a blender in their room.
“I didn’t know… I thought it was just leftover protein. So I’m like, ‘You know what? A little extra protein never hurt anybody,’” Sam continued about his character’s thought process. “I’m not that much of an idiot.”
During the season 3 finale on Sunday, April 6, Ratliff patriarch Timothy (played by Jason Isaacs) used the blender to make poisoned piña coladas to give to all of his family members except Lochlan. Timothy ultimately stopped his wife and older kids from drinking the beverage, though he never cleaned out the blender before Lochlan used it the next morning.
After Lochlan accidentally drank the poison, he vomited and became unconscious. Timothy found Lochlan near the pool and tried to wake him up, which he eventually did.
Sam also opened up about filming the intense scene with Jason, 61, while speaking to Variety in an interview published on April 6.
“I’ve never gotten the chance to die in a show. And it’s an interesting thing, because obviously it’s something that I’ve never experienced in real life. So it’s fun to act things out that you have no idea what the actual experience is like,” he explained. “And it was bittersweet, because over the course of that shoot Jason really felt like my father. He’s one of my best friends. It was hard not to burst into tears while he was holding me and screaming. I had to just stay completely limp.”
Sam also added that he was relieved to no longer have to keep the show’s ending a secret. “I have to be honest, now that it’s all done and I can say what I want, I was much more loose-lipped about it than I should have been,” the Perfect Couple star said. “I told a lot of my friends and my parents, but they are all people who I trust with my life, so I thought they could keep a secret.”
While Lochlan survived his trip to the White Lotus hotel in Thailand, not all of the characters were as lucky.

After spending all season believing that Jim Hollinger (Scott Glenn) killed his father, Rick (Walton Goggins) killed the hotel owner as revenge. However, Rick learned soon after that Jim was actually his father.
After Rick killed Jim, he got into a shootout with the hotel’s security guards and he pulled his girlfriend, Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood), away from the shots. Chelsea died when she caught a bullet, and Rick also had a tragic ending when Gaitok (Tayme Thapthimthong) shot him in order to protect Jim’s wife, Sritala (Lek Patravadi).
